Medicare Open Enrollment starts October 15 and runs through December 7 each year. This is when many Medicare patients review or change Medicare Advantage and Medicare drug plans for the next year. Medicare Open Enrollment
This year, there is one GLP-1 update I do not want Colorado Medicare patients to miss!
Medicare now has a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
For eligible people with Medicare drug coverage, certain GLP-1 medications may be available for a $50 monthly pharmacy copay (Medicare weight loss drug coverage). For years, many Medicare patients were told weight loss medications were simply not covered. Some paid cash. Some used compounded medications. Some gave up because the cost was unrealistic.
Now there is a real pathway for some patients. Not everyone qualifies. Not every GLP-1 product is included. You still need prior authorization. And the $50 copay is for the medication only, not a complete medical weight loss program.
If you are on Medicare in Colorado and wondering whether this could apply to you, this is absolutely worth looking into before or during Open Enrollment.
What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary CMS program that gives eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications for weight loss or weight maintenance at a $50 monthly copay. CMS says the program began July 1, 2026 and is currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2027. CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
This is not the same as every Medicare plan suddenly covering every weight loss medication.
It is a specific program with specific rules.
CMS handles these medications outside the usual Part D benefit payment flow. In addition, the Part D deductible does not apply, the $50 copay does not count toward true out-of-pocket costs, and low-income subsidy does not apply to that $50 copay. CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
Here Is the Practical Version
For patients who qualify, the pharmacy medication copay may be $50 per month.
But the Bridge does not replace medical care, eligibility review, prescribing, prior authorization, follow-up visits, nutrition support, side effect management, or a long-term plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Medicare Part D generally only covers GLP-1s for people with type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease. The new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge has opened GLP-1 coverage up for weight loss. This is a wonderful, yet temporary program, and it does not mean every Medicare patient qualifies.
Medicare currently lists Foundayo tablet, Wegovy injection or tablet, and Zepbound KwikPen. Medicare states that single-dose Zepbound vials or pens are not included.
Eligible patients may pay a $50 monthly pharmacy copay for covered GLP-1 medications through the Bridge. This is the medication copay only and does not replace medical visits, eligibility review, prior authorization, or ongoing care.
Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. This is when many people can review or change Medicare Advantage and Medicare drug plans for the next year.
We sure can! We love working with the Medicare Bridge program here at Weight Loss NP. We can help Medicare patients review whether the Bridge may apply, gather clinical documentation, and build a medically supervised GLP-1 weight loss plan when appropriate.
Yes, prior authorization is generally part of the Bridge process. Eligibility depends on Medicare drug coverage, clinical criteria, documentation, and the specific medication.
You may still have other options. Depending on your health history, a provider may discuss other covered indications, non-GLP-1 medications, nutrition and strength support, metabolic labs, hormone evaluation, or cash-pay options.
