Will insurance cover my weight loss treatment?
There are really two questions hiding inside that one, and they have different answers.
Will insurance cover my visits? For a lot of people, yes. We’re credentialed with Medicare, Medicaid, Aetna and First Health, so your appointments with us can be billed to your plan.
Insurance is accepted for Colorado patients only. Patients in Utah and Florida are self-pay.
Will insurance cover my medication? That depends entirely on your specific plan, and it’s where most people get stuck. Plans that cover GLP-1 medications usually require prior authorization, documentation of what you’ve already tried, and specific clinical criteria. Plans that don’t cover them will deny it outright, and sometimes that denial can be appealed.
We handle that part for you. Prior authorizations, documentation, appeals when a claim gets denied. It’s tedious work and most clinics won’t do it. This applies to Colorado patients.
Insurance we accept
Insurance is accepted for Colorado patients only. Utah and Florida patients are self-pay.
Accepting now:
- Medicare (individual and group)
- Medicaid (individual and group)
- Aetna
- First Health
Credentialing in progress:
- Humana
- Rocky Mountain Health Plans
- Tricare West
- MultiPlan / PHCS
If your plan is on the second list, get in touch anyway. We’ll let you know as soon as we’re in network, and we can talk about options in the meantime. This applies to Colorado patients.
Don’t see your insurance? We still work with patients on a self-pay basis, and for Colorado patients we’ll still run the coverage check on your medication. Your plan may pay for the prescription even if it doesn’t pay for the visit.
Semaglutide Covered by Insurance in Colorado
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic. Whether your plan covers it usually comes down to which one you’re prescribed and why.
Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is approved for weight management. Plans that exclude weight loss drugs will often still cover semaglutide prescribed for diabetes, which is why the diagnosis on the prescription matters as much as the drug itself.
If your plan does cover Wegovy for weight loss, expect it to ask for prior authorization. Most want a documented BMI, a record of what you’ve already tried, and sometimes a related condition like hypertension or sleep apnea. We put that documentation together and submit it. If it comes back denied, we look at the reason and decide whether there’s a basis to appeal.
The free coverage check below tells you where you actually stand before you commit to anything.
Insurance coverage, prior authorization and appeals are available to Colorado patients only. Utah and Florida patients are self-pay.
Tirzepatide Covered by Insurance in Colorado
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro, and it has one coverage route semaglutide doesn’t.
Tirzepatide is FDA approved to treat moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. That’s a separate indication from weight loss, which means some plans that exclude weight loss drugs will still cover it when it’s prescribed for sleep apnea. If you snore, wake up unrested, or your partner has noticed you stop breathing at night, we can order a sleep study and find out.
Mounjaro, prescribed for type 2 diabetes, follows the same logic as Ozempic and is often covered where Zepbound isn’t.
Medicare patients have a third route, which is the Bridge program below.
As with semaglutide, we handle the prior authorization and the appeal if it’s denied.
Medicare patients: the GLP-1 Bridge program
This one is worth knowing about, because it’s new and a lot of people haven’t heard of it yet.
As of July 1, 2026, Medicare covers certain GLP-1 medications for weight loss through a program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, at a $50 monthly copay. Before this, Medicare didn’t cover weight loss medications at all.
What’s covered under the program:
- Wegovy (injection or tablet)
- Zepbound (KwikPen only, not the single-dose vials or pens)
- Foundayo (tablet)
To qualify you need to be 18 or older with a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 or higher with hypertension or kidney disease, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a condition like prediabetes or heart disease. You also can’t already be getting a GLP-1 through your current Part D plan.
One detail worth flagging: that $50 copay doesn’t count toward your yearly Part D deductible or your out-of-pocket limit, because the program sits outside standard Part D coverage.
We’re a credentialed Medicare provider, so we can see you, confirm whether you meet the criteria, and get you started. Book a visit or use the coverage check below.
We accept Medicare for Colorado patients only. Medicare patients in Utah and Florida are self-pay.
Medicaid patients: what’s covered and what isn’t
We’re credentialed with Medicaid and we want to see you. Here’s the straight version of how coverage works, because most clinics won’t walk you through it.
Your visits are covered. Appointments, labs, follow-ups, ongoing medical management. That part is billed to Medicaid.
Medication prescribed purely for weight loss is not. Health First Colorado excludes weight loss drugs from its pharmacy benefit. That’s a state rule, and no prior authorization or appeal changes it.
But there are two covered pathways, and they’re worth checking. GLP-1 medications are FDA approved for more than weight loss, and when they’re prescribed for one of those other conditions, different coverage rules apply:
- Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. Tirzepatide is FDA approved to treat OSA in adults with obesity. If you snore, wake up unrested, or your partner has noticed you stop breathing at night, we can order a sleep study. If the results show moderate to severe sleep apnea, that opens a coverage pathway.
- Type 2 diabetes. GLP-1 medications have been covered for diabetes for years. If you’re diabetic or your labs show you’re heading there, we’ll evaluate that as part of your workup.
We’re not going to promise either of these applies to you. We’ll do the workup, and if the clinical picture supports it, we’ll pursue coverage. If it doesn’t, we’ll say so.
Medical Weight Loss That Accepts Insurance
Most medical weight loss in Colorado is cash-pay. The clinic takes your card, writes the prescription, and the insurance question never comes up because the answer is no.
We went the other direction. We’re credentialed with Medicare, Medicaid, Aetna and First Health, with four more plans in progress, which means your visits, your labs and your ongoing management can be billed to your plan rather than paid out of pocket every month.
Being in network doesn’t guarantee that every visit, test or medication is covered. Plans have their own rules and we won’t pretend otherwise. What it does mean is that you have a provider who bills insurance, who does the prior authorization work, and who will tell you what your plan actually covers before you start rather than after.
If we’re not in network with your plan, we’ll still run the coverage check on your medication. Plenty of people find their prescription is covered even when the visit isn’t.
If your visits are covered but your medication isn’t
If your plan won’t cover the medication, we’ll walk you through self-pay options.
Free coverage check
Tell us your insurance and what you’re interested in, and we’ll find out what your plan actually covers. No cost, no obligation, and you’ll get a straight answer instead of a runaround. The coverage check is for Colorado patients, since we accept insurance for Colorado patients only. Utah and Florida patients are self-pay.
Here’s what we do with it:
- We verify your benefits. We check whether your plan covers the visit, whether it covers GLP-1 medications, and what it requires before approving one.
- We tell you what we find. Including your likely out of pocket cost, and whether we think prior authorization will go through.
- You decide. If it makes sense, we schedule you and handle the paperwork. If it doesn’t, you’ve lost nothing but a few minutes.

Insurance Coverage Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take my insurance for weight loss visits?
We’re currently in network with Medicare, Medicaid, Aetna and First Health. Humana, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Tricare West and MultiPlan / PHCS are in credentialing. If you’re not on either list, we see patients on a self-pay basis and can still help you pursue medication coverage through your plan.
Will my insurance pay for Wegovy, Zepbound, Ozempic or Mounjaro?
It depends on your specific plan, and two people with the same insurance company can have completely different answers depending on their employer’s plan design. That’s exactly what the coverage check is for. If your plan requires prior authorization, we submit it. If it gets denied and there’s a basis to appeal, we appeal.
What if my prior authorization gets denied?
Denials are common and they’re not always final. We look at the reason for the denial and whether there’s clinical documentation that addresses it. Sometimes a peer to peer review or an appeal with better documentation changes the outcome. Sometimes it doesn’t, and we’ll tell you that honestly rather than keep you waiting.
Does Medicare cover weight loss medication?
As of July 1, 2026, yes, through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program at a $50 monthly copay for Wegovy, Zepbound KwikPen, or Foundayo, if you meet the BMI and health criteria. We can confirm your eligibility and get you started.
Does Colorado Medicaid cover GLP-1s?
Not when they’re prescribed purely for weight loss. Health First Colorado excludes weight loss drugs from its pharmacy benefit. There are two other routes worth checking though: GLP-1s prescribed for type 2 diabetes have been covered for years, and tirzepatide is FDA approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. We can order sleep testing if your symptoms point that direction. Your Medicaid visits with us are covered either way.
Will I need prior authorization for a GLP-1 prescription?
Most plans that cover these medications require it. We submit the request and the supporting documentation ourselves, so it isn’t something you have to chase.
My visits are covered but my medication isn’t. What are my options?
If your plan won’t cover the medication, we’ll walk you through self-pay options.
Do you serve patients outside Denver?
Yes. We’re based in Arvada with a Denver office as well, and we see patients throughout the Denver metro and across Colorado, plus Utah and Florida. Visits are telehealth, so you don’t need to drive to us.
What does it cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?
We’ll give you exact numbers during your coverage check, before you commit to anything. No surprise billing.
